 Pain Management

Chronic pain can make our lives miserable. Its management is crucial to us being able to live normally and carry on doing doing the activities which allow us to enjoy and be involved in life. There are many conditions that can produce pain acquired injuries from road traffic accidents,  traditional diseases that leave behind permanent damage, auto-immune disorders, wear and tear of the joints. The list is extensive.

The question is, when we reach the point where our pain may not improve, how do we go about managing it in the long term? Of course depending on your ailment your doctor or GP will likely design a multi pronged approach prescribing medication, being as active as is possible, maybe some physio; all of which can be of great benefit. Exploring this holistic approach, it may be useful to ask another question - what impact can the mind and our perception of pain have upon the pain that we are feeling, and how do I go about trying to utilise any benefits available to me?

We know that the mind is the source of the feeling of pain. Even though the injury may occur elsewhere in the body, the sensation of pain is generated by the mind and trying to tell us that we need to stop whatever activity we are doing because it is damaging us. We also know that the mind is capable of changing its pain perception. It is this shift in perception that we are looking to facilitate, the gaining of this skill of being consciously able to shift our attention away from pain can be of great use to people trying to manage chronic conditions.

There are many instances in which pain is ignored or acknowledged but dealt with later because there is something deemed more important happening that takes precedence over the pain signal. Have you not ever found a cut or bruise which seems to have come from nowhere? Its likely that when you sustained that injury, there was something that had your undivided focus.

Hypnotherapy can help us manage chronic pain. During Hypnosis our minds become incredibly focused upon our internal world. It is this undivided attention that reduces the sensation of pain because the mind's faculties are being used for other purposes and does not have teh processing power to generate signals of pain. Beyond the therapy room suggestions can be given to encourage the subconscious mind to dampen pain signals. In some cases pain can be removed entirely, although this is not always advisable as it's important we are aware on some level that damage is occuring in the body.
