 public speaking

This is a very common fear; people imagine themselves looking at an audience and the idea of being scrutinised, analysed and potentially 'put on the spot', amplifys any worries they may have about their character.

 In this circumstance Hypnosis gives us two main tools with which to deal with the stress placed upon us when speaking publicly. It allows us to focus in the present, which gives us the opportunity to not think about the various scenarios in which things could go wrong, and it allows us to give you emotive tools which can be drawn upon when feeling stressed and move us toward a more positive and confident state of mind.

In reality, the fear, stress, and anxiety arising from the prospect of public speaking are the symptoms of the imagining of a future event, but what is the root cause? and how can hypnotherapy help in uncovering and treating that root?

People worry about their abilities to deliver on what is expected of them, they dwell upon failure, but often also what other people are thinking about them, particularly negative or critical points of view. Hypnotherapy is a fantastic tool with which to improve confidence and self belief, in hypnosis clients can imagine themselves into the future scenario in which they are performing well and with confidence. This idea has its basis that the mind does not differentiate between whether something is real or imagined as long as it is believed in, hypnotherapy allows us to create very real images in our mind that it takes as being real so if we imagine a positive outcome vividly, this is what we will come to expect, and negative or positive expectation is a large part of our ability to perform.

An american professor, Robert Sopolsky, along with his predessors in the field of stress and neuro-biology have made great contributions to the field. One of which is the investigation behind the human response to stress and how this arises. Although animals have the same physiological stress reponse to stimulus in their environment they perceive as stressful, they would certainly not find public speaking to be one of them, or maybe more relevently, they would find the idea of being hunted stressful as it is not happening now, and are incapable of imagining its occurance.

Public speaking is a stressful event that many people can relate to, but really it's not the event itself that is causes stress, more it is the idea of the event that is stressful; and this is an important distinction when faced with fears such as public speaking or any other imagined stresses for that matter. It is a blessing that we can use our minds to predict events, but a curse that it can trigger our stress response system as this can reduce our ability to perform as well as we could and we become debilitated. Hypnotherapy allows to turn negative imagined scenarios into positive ones, allowing us to be construtive about our preparations instead of being paralysed by fear and the stress response.
