Its helpful for post hypnotic suggestions to be anchored into an action the individual can perform outside the therapy room which has a noticeable effect which then builds and feeds into other suggestions. One of the most common is the anchor; with the finger and forefinger being pinched together to elicit a response prepared during hypnotherapy. However this can rather abstract trigger, especially if we are looking for a response which would not be associated with the pressure of the two fingers. For example confidence and determination could be related to the sensation of pressure, though perhaps relaxation and anxiety less so.

The idea of having the correct posture as being the start of a process of having the correct frame of mind for meditation has been expounded by several meditation systems including Zen and Yoga. When we have correct posture our organs are situated naturally and we can breathe easily and not be constricted.

Attaching feelings of confidence and worth to maintaining good posture is a natural association and perfect for a post hypnotic suggestion. The physical sensation of having a naturally straight back and wide, loose shoulders feels relaxing in itself and is something real which acts as a trigger to the post hypnotic response. The fact that the trigger is very noticeable and is something which the individual can activate at any time is also helpful.

Appearing confident and relaxed means that other people are more likely to respond favourably, resulting in many opportunities for experiences which may be used to challenge negative distorted thoughts and produce dissonance and rumination providing the motivation for change.
