There are many different approaches or potential methods within hypnotherapy. One of these is the use of metaphor to convey a message conducive to the healing of the issue an individual. A valid question could be posed; why be so vague during hypnotherapy? Why not be clear regarding your message and information? And it would be a good one. Hypnotherapy recognises that the conscious and subsconscious minds function in significantly different ways. Consciously, we analyse and rationalise, subconsciously we are more concerned with abstraction and imagery. Given that during hypnotherapy our aim is to convey meaning, information, and bring about realisation of inner resources, it is wise to couch the information in a format palatable and intelligible to the subconscious, thus metaphor is the perfect vehicle. In addition, some people can take issue with being told information directly, and this more indirect method can be more suitable to reduce any resistance to moving into hypnosis and accepting suggestions. Metaphors are simply stories with an underlying meaning which is framed within the context of the individual's issue, allowing the subconscious to draw its own conclusions most relevant to its purpose; the healthy function of body and mind. Metaphors are constructed with the individual in mind, according to their sensory preference and personal experience and imagery, making sure that the illustration is of something that the person can relate to and accept and therefore believe in so that meaning can be ratified. Hypnotic metaphor is often used in conjunction with other aspects of hypnotherapy but is a very effective method for initiating change if employed properly.
